Calendar

What is known as the Calendar of Shiyan is the calendar most used through out Ta Los, and most of Kralis. It was originally developed by the Sage Master Shiyan Lutan in the Year of Grayness 500 B.F.A. It was not the only calendar to be developed. A great number of regional local calendars were developed during some of the classical periods of the various realms. The calendar is divided into 12 months, of four weeks per month and seven days. There are an additional four days that fall between the months, dividing them each into four sections called Reckonings. This makes the calendar 340 days.

Hours of the day

Times of Day In Kralis, there were 12 hours named after Celestia constellations, each hour nominally being the length of two modern hours. When spoken it is said as: 'The Time of the XXX or the Hours of XXX.'

Counting the Days

The seven days that make up a week divided the month into seven-days based on the phases of the 3 moons of Kralis, with the mid day of the week often holding some significance. The 28-day month, or a complete cycle of the moon Amm, was originally too large a period of time to manage effectively, and thus Shiyan divided the months into four equal parts of seven. The mid range moon of Kralis: Amm has as cycle of 27 days 16 hours, and there are 12 phases of Amm.

  • New Moon
  • Waxing Crescent Moon
  • First Quarter Moon
  • Waxing Gibbous Moon
  • Full Moon
  • Waning Gibbous Moon
  • Third Quarter Moon
  • Waning Crescent Moon

The smallest and closest moon: Rimdor has 6 phases and has a cycle of 8 days and 12 hours. The third moon, sitting beyond Amm, is Mantara which has a cycle 32 days and 12 hours with 16 phases.

The phases of Amm and Mantara have additional phases called Stations, where Rimdor passes in front of Amm for 24 hours, and where Amm passes in front of Mantara for up to 3 days.

Marking the years

Within the lands of Ta Los each of the realms counts the years differently from specific points within their history. Years themselves are referred to by names, most adhere to the year name that originates within the Southern Realms, though each Realm also names its years and each nation, kingdom or city-state often counts its years differently, often from one major event to another. This can result in a hodgepodge of overlapping names, dates and numbers that confuses most people and frustrates sages, explorers and archaeologists. The widespread differing year dates include the following:

Before First Age (BFA)

The most accurate and most consistent counting of years is through the Common Year Calendar. It has been implemented by the Senate of Dardura Sheva, as well as a number of Capitals through out Ta Los. The counting of these years begin at 0 First Age. With years prior to the First Age being called Before First Age. Beginning at 0 B.F.A. the count was renamed to the Common Year (CY) and the current date is 1860 C.Y.

Southern Reckoning (SR)

The most often used and referred of years, besides that of the BFA, is Southern Reckoning. This is the marking of years as determined by the Senate of Dardura Sheva. It is based on the Founding of Dardura Sheva: 0 SR. This corresponds to the 1,500 B.F.A. The current date in Southern Reckoning is 3360 S.R.

Northern Reckoning (NR)

Northern Reckoning begins with the Founding Year of the Capital the Kingdom of Panthais, Bragih (1,480 B.F.A). This dating system was rarely used outside of official legal documents through out the Northern Realms. This current date is 3460 N.R.

Western Reckoning(WR)

One of the oldest calendars in use in Ta Los, this ancient scheme of record-keeping dates from the founding of destruction of Kha Ersti (8,980 B.F.A.) in modern day Malthuran Empire. The current date is 10840 W.R.

Eastern Reckoning (ER)

The Eastern Reckoning began with the Rise of Shadow Lord (thought to be a demi-god born of Mala) in 2,200 B.F.A, as it rises in power by killing a chief of one of the nomads clans in the Sea of Grass. The current date in the east is 4060 E.R.

Murcarsius (Universal) Date (MD)

Perhaps the most accurate counting of years is through the Murcarsius Date counting. It begins at the beginning, or what is thought of as the beginning, of the Omniverse. The current Murcarsius Date is 12.00.01.55. It is based on the calculation of: B.(billionth of year:1-20), M. (millionth of year: 1-99), T. (thousandth of year:1-99), H. (hundredth of year:1-999), Y. (current year:1-10),M. (month of year:1-12), D. (day of month:1-30).
